From Grace Kelly to Meghan Markle: 5 Royal Wedding Dresses to Take Inspiration From

Updated: May 25

Royal weddings have been an inspiration for brides-to-be for a long time. From the modern-day princess look sported by Meghan Markle to a more traditional voluminous gown worn by Kate Middleton, these looks will make you feel like a princess on your big day.

So, it’s no surprise that most brides look to history to get some inspiration for their wedding dress. This blog will feature some royal wedding dresses you can take inspiration from.

1.Grace Kelly – 1956

Grace Kelly’s wedding dress is nothing less than legendary when we talk about royal wedding dresses. The ultimate definition of a fairytale wedding, her wedding dress is one of the most referenced bridal ensembles today.

The dress featured a high neck, long lace sleeves, and a dramatic billowing skirt (with a 10-and-a-half-foot-long train). It was made by designer Helen Rose and featured 125-year-old Brussels lace, thousands of hand-sewn pearls, and taffeta.

2.Queen Elizabeth – 1947

The longest reigning monarch in the history of the UK wore a satin Duchesse wedding gown with long sleeves for her wedding to Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. The gown featured floral embroidery with crystal and pearl appliqué (10,000 pearls). It was designed by Norman Hartnell, who took inspiration from Botticelli's painting "Primavera".

The 13-foot-long trail made for an elaborate entrance and the trends for royal weddings of the future.

3.Princess Diana – 1981

You can’t forget the people’s princess when we talk about iconic royal wedding dresses. Made by designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel, the dress was an instant hit, and thousands of knockoffs have been made till date. The combination of silk and taffeta took everyone’s breath away.

The gown was prepared in months, with over 10,000 pearls, a 25-foot-long train, and lace from Queen Mary’s collection.

4.Meghan Markle – 2018

Meghan Markle’s nuptials had the world buzzing, and her dress didn’t disappoint. The sleek and minimal three-quarter sleeve gown by Givenchy featured an elegant bateau neckline and long dramatic veil. It was a perfect fit for a modern princess.
